Spencer Gulf Port Link (SGPL), the consortium developing the new common user bulk facility at Port Bonython, has launched a stakeholder website as community engagement for the port’s Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) begins.
Building positive relationships with stakeholders is a major focus for Flinders Port Holdings, the consortium partner managing planning and approvals for the deep water terminal.
Sean Reardon, General Manager, Infrastructure at the Flinders Ports Group said, “Our EIS guidelines are rigorous and we are conducting detailed studies of the environmental, economic and social impacts of the proposal. These assessments will provide an in-depth understanding of existing conditions at Port Bonython and how proceeding with the project might affect the area.”
A Port Bonython EIS website has been set up to provide progress updates and gather feedback from individuals and groups with vested interests in the development.
“It is essential for us to be as inclusive as possible and connect with all stakeholders. The local community should have their say and have any concerns addressed,” said Mr Reardon.
The facility planned for Port Bonython includes a three-kilometre jetty with storage facilities and a conveyance system for bulk minerals. Cape-size vessels, carrying up to 180,000 tonnes of cargo, will be able to berth at the common user port. A rail spur will link the port to the existing Port Augusta/Whyalla rail line. The multi-million dollar investment should create around 400 jobs.
Flinders Port Holdings has engaged a team of experts, including engineering design consultants, Arup, to fully analyse all aspects of the bulk port scheme.
Mr Reardon said, “In addition to updates for stakeholders, all study findings will be documented in the project’s EIS, which is expected to be released for public comment later this year.”
