Flinders Ports has increased its youth travel grant scheme this year, boosting the annual fund to $14,000, due to the program’s growing success. The scheme, which is administered through the office of MP for Flinders, Peter Treloar, aims to help local families with the cost of travel to sporting, cultural and educational events. Vincent Tremaine, Chief Executive Officer of Flinders Port Holdings, said, “Travel costs can become a burden and a bar to taking part, so it’s important for local kids to get support to participate.”
The Flinders Ports Youth Travel Grant Scheme has been assisting families in Port Lincoln and the Eyre Peninsula since 2005. The program has helped countless local children over the years, with 308 families receiving assistance with their children’s travel costs for scholastic, cultural and sporting activities in 2015 alone.
“A local MP, like Peter, knows the local community, so is ideally placed to administer the funds. The electorate office does a great job and is fully aligned with our corporate social responsibility objectives,” Mr Tremaine said.
Mr Treloar said that travel from regional areas was always challenging.
“Our office is extremely pleased to assist Flinders Ports in their travel support for young people from Eyre Peninsula. Travel is always costly, and this sponsorship goes some way towards alleviating those costs – and allowing our students to make the most of opportunities,” Mr Treloar said.
