The delegates were escorted to the Ports to gain an in-depth understanding of operating a world-class ports authority with a focus on quality assurance, security, safety and environmental systems. Port Authority Tonga was established to promote, encourage and assist in the development of commercially viable and efficient ports in Tonga. The function of the authority is to establish, improve, maintain, operate and manage ports, services and facilities in connection with the operation of the ports in Tonga.

Flinders Ports operates seven ports in South Australia including the cruise ship Passenger Terminal and the Container Terminal at Port Adelaide. With over 580 employees, seven ports and numerous office locations, Flinders Ports has a wealth of knowledge and practical experience about reviewing and implementing safety and quality practices in operating a busy port.

Flinders Port Holdings’ CEO Vincent Tremaine said that “safety and environmental protection are paramount in all that we do at Flinders Ports. We proudly hold ISO certifications in quality systems, environment and safety, and have sound procedures in place to ensure the smooth and safe running of our ports every day, from our office staff to marine pilots to our stevedoring personnel”.

Dr Sione Tu’itupou Fotu, Deputy Chairman of the Port Authority Tonga Board of Directors said that “The Port Authority Tonga is striving to improve the quality and safety standards of its operations. There are currently no ISO accredited organisations in the Tonga region, and in working towards and achieving these accreditations, we aim to improve the quality, efficiency and customer relations of our Port. We chose Flinders Ports to model change from due to their high standards of safety and quality, and want to apply these standards in our own Port”.

Tremaine added that “We are proud of our safety, quality, security and environmental track record. We are pleased and eager to be able to share our experiences with the Port Authority Tonga who are actively seeking to improve their safety and quality practices”.
